I welcome the news that speed cameras in Oxfordshire are to be turned on again (Wednesday’s Oxford Mail, right).

Liberal Democrat members of the county council opposed the switch-off in the first instance, and we’re delighted that a deal is being brokered to ensure that this bad decision can be reversed.

Hopefully, their return will help prevent accidents on our roads.

We know that speed is only one factor in accidents, but the very presence of speed cameras acts as a useful reminder and deterrent for when car drivers forget to monitor their own speed.

It does seem that speeds have increased since the switch-off – we very much hope that this is not reflected in the county’s road casualty figures at the end of the year.
