Perhaps the greatest feelgood musical of them all, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is in Aylesbury this week to the delight of fans old and new.

Old in my case, having reviewed the show dozens of times over more than 30 years. I never tire of it; no matter how often one sees it, it comes up fresh as paint.

Aylesbury’s smashing new Waterside Theatre proves a perfect venue for the musical, with every member of the audience close-up to the action.

New in the title role is Scottish lad Keith Jack, close second in the BBC1 show Any Dream Will Do, in which Andrew Lloyd Webber sought a star for the West End revival of his and Tim Rice’s first musical. His winning stage presence, well-toned muscles and powerful tenor voice make him ideal for the part.

But, of course, this is far from a one-person show. The score makes heavy demands on the Narrator, who is excellently portrayed by Trina Hill.

Lachlan Scheuber seizes his moment as the hip-swivelling, lip-curling Elvis-style Pharaoh.

There is great work, too, from the actors playing Joseph’s 11 brothers, with the western-style One More Angel in Heaven and the celebration of all things French in Those Canaan Days proving highlights as ever.

Until Saturday. Don’t miss.
