THOUSANDS of people across Oxfordshire came to a standstill yesterday to pay tribute to servicemen and women killed in battle.
High streets, shopping centres and offices fell silent at 11am so people could pay their respects.
The Lord Mayor of Oxford, John Goddard, led the service at Oxford Town Hall, before city council staff observed the silence.
At County Hall, Oxfordshire County Council chairman Hilary Hibbert Biles led a service and silence.
The county’s five military bases paid tribute and schools also marked the occasion.
At RAF Benson Primary School, a number of youngsters with parents in Afghanistan paid their poignant tribute.
Base spokesman Nikki Hamilton said: “With personnel currently serving in Afghanistan, it is a particularly poignant time for RAF Benson, and we all took time to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf.”
The date and time marks the end of the First World War in 1918 — the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”.
On Sunday, parades and memorial services will be held across the county.
