Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal collision on the A34 today.

The collision occurred at about 5.20am on the northbound carriageway just north of the Kidlington on-slip.

Police said a green Ford Focus collided with a Renault articulated lorry parked in a layby.

The Ford Focus caught fire on impact resulting in a significant fire affecting both vehicles.

The driver of the Ford Focus was declared dead at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to identify the deceased.

The A34 was closed for a considerable time while emergency services worked at the scene and was eventually reopened at about 11.30am.

There was a second collision within the tailback caused by the road closures which was also dealt by police.

Firefighters had to cut an 18-year-old woman out of a Citroen Saxo after it was in a collision with a Land Rover shortly after 9.30am.

She was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for treatment to her injuries that are thought to be minor at this time.

Sgt Pete Peter Jell, of the Road Death Investigation Unit, said: “I would urge anyone who saw the earlier collision, or who may have seen the Ford Focus prior to the collision, to come forward and help us with our investigation.

“While the circumstances of the collision are still unclear and are being investigated, I would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to adjust their driving to the conditions that we have been seeing on the county’s roads over the past week.

“Slow down, keep a safe distance from the car in front, use your lights and allow more time for your journey.”
