WHEN the new Paddock Bar, with its racing theme, opened at the Carpenters Arms in 1982, Swell Sound, a two-year-old colt, came along to enjoy the first pint. The horse is pictured with its owner, licensee Ken Freeman, trainer Matt McCormack, stable lad Jim Devlin and jockey Robert Street.

Teenagers spent part of their summer holiday in 1986 sprucing up a bus shelter in Pinnocks Way. It had been painted black to cover up graffiti, and the boys decided to brighten it up with pink and white paint. They were, in the second picture, back row, from left, Jamie Gibson, 16, Royston Byles, 11, Andy King, 17, Marc Gavaghan, 14, and front, Michael Cooper, 13, Martin Howes, 11, Darren Bellcourt, 15, and David White, 13.

The third picture dates from 1967 when a new church hall – called the Rosary Room – was blessed, then opened at the foot of Yarnell’s Hill.
