PEOPLE concerned about the air quality in Witney are being urged to have their say on plans to tackle the issue.

This is the final week people can voice their opinion on West Oxfordshire District Council’s air quality management for the town.

The draft action plan is to lower nitrogen dioxide levels around Bridge Street, a traffic bottle-neck.

Tests have shown pollution in the area is above national standards and that traffic is the cause of the problem.

The main plan to tackle the pollution is to build the controversial Cogges Link Road, which will run from Oxford Hill, around the Cogges estate, to Station Lane. Other ideas include encouraging the use of bicycles, public transport and greener vehicles.

Councillor David Harvey, cabinet member for the environment, said it was important that steps were taken to improve Bridge Street.

He said: “I would encourage residents and people who work or travel through the Bridge Street area to look at the draft action plan and give us their views.”

The plans can be viewed and commented on at the council’s town centre shop in Welch Way, the Elmfield Offices in New Yatt Road or online at westoxon.gov.uk/airquality. Comments should be made by February 28.
