A Victorian house in East Oxford is a treasure trove of period features.

Linden Lodge, in St Mary’s Road, was a labour of love for the late Reverend John Reynolds, a keen historian and theologian.

When he bought the property 25 years ago, the house was dilapidated but still had most of its original features from 1876. He and his wife Dinah invested much time and money restoring it to its former glory.

Mr Reynolds viewed more than 50 properties in central Oxford before falling for Linden Lodge and it was the dining room which clinched it. Mrs Reynolds explained: “My husband was passionate about all things Victorian and it was the high ceilings in the dining room that really appealed to him, as it gave him the space he needed to hang his family portraits.

“It didn’t matter that the house needed extensive work, he could see its potential. We couldn’t move in for eight months after we bought it because of the building work.

“We spent as much on the renovations as we paid for it but it was worth it. I’ve had 25 very happy years here.”

The house includes a drawing room and dining room, both with original fireplaces, a study, three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a cloakroom, converted loft and a cellar.

The original tiled hall floor is still there, as are the fireplaces and wooden floors.

Although the couple had the drawing room extended, they kept the original French doors, which open on to a walled garden.

There is also a garage, driveway and front garden and at the back is a lawn, two terraces, two outhouses and the original Victorian outside lavatory.

Keith Stacey, of agents Breckon & Breckon, said: “This is a truly unique property in a very central location, only half-a-mile from Oxford High Street.

“It has incredible features and its spacious rooms and extensive gardens will make a wonderful family home.”

Linden Lodge is on the market for £775,000. For more information, or to arrange a viewing, contact Breckon & Breckon on 01865 244735 or visit breckon.co.uk
