ORGANISERS of a charity moustache growing contest in 1978 were surprised to find three women among the entrants. They were given a quick trim by barber Bill Govier to make sure everyone started as equals. The women – Sue Simmons, Jane Winfield and Rita Gallagher – were expected to arrive on inspection night with false moustaches.
More than 2,500 people attended Bampton Street Fair – we’re not sure which year – despite heavy rain. The 60 stalls did a brisk trade in between the showers. In the second picture, Annabelle Newman, eight, left, and Gemma Clack, seven, tuck into their ice lollies.
An It’s a Knockout-style fete in l973 brought lots of laughs – and hazards. In the third picture, competitors are making a hash of filling a can with water and keeping it upright.
