CHILDREN in Cowley can finally get to grips with new equipment at a play area three months after vandals set fire to the facility.

A total of £53,000 was spent at the Dene Road playground to repair the vandalised items and improve the equipment and grounds.

It was officially opened on Thursday, alongside another at Ridley Road, which has been refurbished.

Lye Valley councillor Bob Timbs said: “It was disappointing Dene Road was hit by vandalism, but I am pleased we were able to repair the equipment rather than replace it.

“I am delighted these two play areas are now open and being used by young children in the area.”

Vandals set light to the new climbing net at the Dene Road site on Thursday, March 24. It caused serious damage, which cost Oxford City Council £8,000 to repair.

Thames Valley Police spokesman Chris Kearney said no one had been arrested in relation to the incident and officers were still keen to speak to a group of youths seen playing in the area shortly before the fire.

Dene Road play area now boasts a basket swing and traditional swing set, a large net, an aerial runway, a rope bridge and a new slide.

Dominic Isle, 33, from Hollow Way, took his 16-month-old daughter Bella to the opening.

He said: “It’s the first time I’ve been since the new bits and pieces have been in. I think she’ll definitely get more out of it as she gets older.”

At Ridley Road there are areas designed for children of all ages, including a “vortex” swing, new climbing frame and slide, toddler swings, springers, and football goals.

Work there cost about £40,000 and took eight weeks to complete.

Eight-year-old Hannah Hanlon said the play area was “brilliant”.

And seven-year-old Ella Casey, from Cranmer Road, said: “It’s fun, I like the slide area best.”

The two play areas are among 69 being refurbished as part of a £2.5m council programme.

So far 49 have been revamped with state-of-the-art equipment, with 20 still to be completed.

Each area is designed in consultation with local residents and children who use the facilities.

Council board member for parks and sport Mark Lygo said: “This improvement work is a great benefit to young people and hopefully will encourage them to visit the play areas and enjoy them.”
