STAFF and pupils have been celebrating after their school had one of the country’s most improved exam results.

Bicester Community College saw its GCSE results improve year on year for three consecutive years, by 20 percentage points, from 2007 to 2010.

To mark the results, the Queens Avenue school has been given a ‘Most Improved School Award’ from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.

The number of students achieving at least five A* to C GCSEs, including English and maths, jumped from 32 per cent in 2007 to 55 per cent of students in 2010. The national average in 2007 was 46 per cent and in 2010 was 54 per cent.

Principal Jason Clarke said: “The college received congratulations for significantly improving its five A*-C results, including GCSE English and mathematics. All members of the college community are delighted that the improvements in student attainment have been recognised.

“This provides further evidence that the college has the capacity and drive to build on the improvements already acknowledged, and endorses Ofsted’s findings from last October.”

Mr Clarke also congratulated Cooper School, Churchill Road, Bicester, which was graded outstanding in a recent Ofsted inspection.
