REGARDING David Diment’s letter (Oxford Mail, June 17) concerning the bogus phone call he received about his “recent car accident”, I had a similar phone call – which is interesting, as I am not allowed to drive and never have done so.

I made a note of the number, jotted it down, and added it to the number of unwanted calls we receive.

How does one stop it, though?

Sadly the Telephone Preference Service can do little to help with these calls. I suggest that, for a small fee, he purchases a phone with caller display. This system tells you who is calling.

Also get an answerphone, and allow ‘international’, ‘unavailable’ numbers to ring until the answerphone cuts in.

This will soon cut down the number of unwanted calls. Alternatively, answer the phone, listen to who is calling, put it down on the work surface, and continue with what you were disturbed from. You’re not paying for it, after all. Let them prattle on; they’ll soon realise they are talking to themselves and hang up.

Revenge is sweet, Mr Diment. Try it. And good luck.
