RACHAEL O’CONNOR gets down and boogies at Girl Friday in the basement of Castle Tavern.

When it comes to showcasing one’s finest moves on the dance floor, it should never be forgotten that however one plays the game, the vast majority of us are going to wind-up looking silly.

Silly as a snake in a top hat. Silly as digging your backyard with a kitchen fork.

Silly as the word ‘silly’ probably sounds in your head by now.

However, on occasion a club night enters the scene which is about something more than just looking silly – or trying to avoid that inevitable consequence.

One such night is Girl Friday – whose influential impact on the development of a vibrant social scene for Oxford’s lesbian community is undeniable.

Held on the second Friday of each month, this is the only regular gay girl event in our fair city.

In the eight months it’s been running, Girl Friday has garnered a loyal following – especially with Oxford and Brookes University LBGT Society members.

This comes as no surprise as the night is held in the basement of one of the friendliest hubs of the gay pubbing scene in the city – Castle Tavern.

The popular pub with its high-flying rainbow flag captures a traditional public house feel offering a genial vibe for relaxed conversation.

However, downstairs offers a totally different Friday night experience – disco balls, laser lighting and 80s animation ticks all the right boxes for a full-on basement boogie – and it’s free.

From ten til two, delightful resident DJ Nelly B Page takes to the decks playing all the very best chart-topping hits – from La Roux’s Bulletproof to Britney’s Toxic.

Your drink is guaranteed to be served with a smile, bar staff and organisers are emphatically friendly and can regularly be spotted having a cheeky shot with new faces.

Girl Friday promises a frivolous night out – a silly evening’s worth of fun that’s definitely doing it for the girls and happily looks set to stand the test of time.
