RESIDENTS and developers will meet face to face over fears of a landfill plant near Barton.

McKenna Plant Hire, which owns the Woodeaton Quarry, is proposing to use the site for the disposal of “inert construction waste”.

But residents fear that will generate an extra 30 lorry movements a day through the Barton estate, which is already preparing for the arrival of a 1,000-home housing development on its doorstep.

Oxford city councillor for Barton, Van Coulter, said: “This meeting will allow McKenna to put their case before concerned residents.

“There will be a discussion on how residents feel about the issue and whether there should be a campaign on it.”

The plans would involve some 30 lorries travelling through Barton each day for ten years. Their route would take them along the Bayswater Road and the B4027.

Mr Coulter said: “There will be quite a bit of noise and quite a bit of vibration on a regular basis Ginette Camps-Walsh, who lives along the B4027, has organised the meeting on Monday. She said: “The main concern is the level of traffic. There are a number of quite dangerous junctions.”

Michael McKenna, director of the Wheatley-based firm, said: “We are willing to engage with the residents and we are dealing with Natural England to save the archaeology in the Quarry.

“It is not as bad as people think. We have been delivering into Barton since 1964 and there has never been a problem.

“We cannot say there is definitely going to be ‘this amount’ of movements because we have to go to Oxfordshire County Council. It is all a bit up in the air.”

The site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the fossils found there, and discussions were held last year to turn it into a country park.

The county council will decide on the plans. Its spokesman said: “We encourage developers to enter into pre-application discussions and engage with the local community prior to the submission of planning applications. We understand the prospective applicant is aiming to submit a full planning application in September.”

The meeting will take place at Beckley Village Hall at 7.30pm on Monday.
