THEY say one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

Well a 15-year-old boy is now hoping to get the county recycling with his new website which allows the people of Oxford to save their rubbish from landfill.

Gabriel Harper, who has just finished his GCSEs at Chiltern Edge School, started his internet recycling group in his village with his 20-year-old brother Quentin two years ago.

He said: “We thought that people need to clear out their junk and we wanted to do something for the environment.

“It has been a fantastic success so far and there has been quite positive feedback. Hopefully we can expand throughout the county.”

The concept of his site is simple enough – in order to save items from going to landfill, anyone hoping to get rid of something can list it on the webpage.

Anyone who wants that item selects it on the website which then sends an automatic email to its owner. It can then be collected from their doorstep.

The concept has already taken off in Gabriel’s village of Sonning Common, where the website has around 800 members and has seen 1,700 items, from coffee makers to fish tanks, saved from landfill in the past two years.

Other items which have found a new home with the help of the recycling group include a piano, a greenhouse and a 15ft swimming pool.

If the venture proves successful in Oxford, Gabriel could expand it beyond the county. He said: “If a 15-year-old has come up with a good idea, then the fact that they are 15 should not hold them back.”

A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council said: “The council would like to congratulate Mr Harper for his innovative idea and wishes him and those who use his scheme every success. The council welcomes these sorts of initiatives and is aware of and supports others that are in operation across the county.”
