Steve Metcalf surprised his wife Sal with the unusual grassy gesture at their Abingdon home.

The landscape gardener-turned-engineer said: “I guess I am just an old romantic. I started off going around with a lawnmower, just judging it by eye.

“As the grass grows back, it is a case of being careful to go out with a pair of shears.

“With the letters, it’s just hard work on my hands and knees with shears.”

Mr Metcalf maintains his lawn at the Faringdon Road house with a two-hour pruning session every day.

“It’s dedication,” the 42-year-old admitted. “But she is worth it.”
