Sir – The Government’s decision to cut discounted coach fares for pensioners and disabled people shows how little they care about the most vulnerable in our society.

The concessionary coach scheme was a lifeline for many people and a vital link leaving people more isolated and alone and possibly unable to afford coach travel.

For the pensioner who uses a coach for their annual holiday, or simply to visit relatives, or for the disabled person who has no other means of getting about, losing concessionary coach travel will greatly reduce their quality of life. The cost of coach travel has now risen sharply for the elderly and disabled — an Oxford to London return ticket on the Oxford Tube has risen from £8 to £13. These cuts could also threaten the long-term viability of certain routes if passenger numbers begin to fall.

Before the election David Cameron pledged to protect subsidised travel for the over-60s, why has he broken that promise?
