I was one person in a large crowd that was in St Giles on Sunday morning to support the remembrance service, which I thought went off very well. As the weather was good it encouraged more people to attend and honour and respect our fallen soldiers.

Sadly, after the event, when the Lord Mayor and all of the dignitaries went into St John’s College for their tea and biscuits and to use toilet facilities if needed, no such facility for the crowd supporting the event.

So much for the toilet situation being excellent, as Mr Tanner claimed in a recent letter to View Points. This is proof, if needed, that this could not be farther from the truth.

As a former soldier, along with my colleague and our two wives, we went to Debenhams store and used their facility. After we all four had a nice cup of coffee, a member of the restaurant staff came up to us and said, as both of us men were ex-military, we would have our money refunded for all four coffees. A very kind gesture by the restaurant staff.

I don’t think Debenhams would welcome everyone just using their toilets when persons are not shopping there, so it’s the council’s duty to provide adequate facilities of this nature for the able and disabled.

With an event of this nature and large crowds expected, portable toilets could have been used, as they are when St Giles fair is here. Most people know, I’m sure, that the Victorian toilets underground in St Giles will never be used again for health and safety reasons and are not disabled-friendly.
