Sir – Although I have not any real vested interest in the car parking debate, I feel I must put my head over the parapet in support of others, than the county brigade and their sympathisers (Letters, November 24). The suggestion that all car parking should be charged for demonstrates a total lack of understanding by certain members of our society, on the effect that this would have on the many lower paid, such as shop-workers, cleaners, clerical staff in offices etc.

Can they not appreciate that if say, £1.50 a day, five days a week, 46 weeks a year equates to nearly £350.00, in effect an extra tax. This is a substantial amount to some, while not others it seems.

I do on the other hand, appreciate that there is a real need for London commuters, as the car park is full very quickly, it was bad enough before these charges came into force and now impossible, as I have found out. I feel that this development has been promoted by the city council’s general anti-car syndrome; this has been so, in my experience, the city’s philosophy over very many years. Also might I suggest such additional costs as in this case, does little to fostering people to take up full employment.

Would it not be more progressive to scrap these new charges altogether and go along with the county council’s more enlightened stance, to really get people off the road and into public transport.
