I WRITE in reply to Roger Tucker (Oxford Mail, November 18) who asks for justification for the “lavish robes worn by bishops”.

If you take a look at those entering the presence of the Queen at Buckingham Palace, you will see they are correctly dressed, and rightly so.

The clergy, while on duty, are in the presence of the ‘King of Kings’, so there is even more reason for them to be richly dressed.

As for Africa, we are feeding and helping them, and I understand we give very generously with foreign aid.

Can’t we do both – give aid to Africa and dress our bishops lavishly in the ‘King’s’ honour?

Surely there is no need to lower our standards.
