I WRITE regarding a letter I received this morning from Southern Electric. We have been paying by a direct debit payment “the figure set by them” for the past year.

The letter said the predicted amount of electricity they expect us to use before the next annual review means that our direct debit needs to be increased. They have doubled our payment all by three pounds per month!

We are fortunate that as both my wife and I work full-time, we an afford it.

My worry is for the unemployed and pensioners affording it with winter on its way. I wonder what they would say if I told them that I predict that I will be using less in the future, so will be paying less than I do at present.

It seems to me it’s a licence for them to print money.
