FESTIVE cheer filled Abingdon last night as the town’s Christmas lights switch-on went with a bang.

This year’s theme was Kings and Queens and a parade made its way through the streets before the evening culminated with an impressive fireworks display.

Nicola Blackwood, MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, had the honour of turning on the lights outside the Town museum before joining the crowds to enjoy the display.

She said: “It has been a great pleasure to join Abingdon residents in celebrating the start of the festive season. The lights and decorations really add sparkle to the town.”

Ms Blackwood, pictured, was joined by the Mayor of Abingdon Mike Badcock, councillors and Abingdon Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old Oxfordshire-grown Christmas tree is standing proud outside the Prime Minister’s 10 Downing Street home.

The fir tree, which was grown at Christmas Common near Watlington, was picked for the honour by the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association in October from about 100 entries.

It was delivered yesterday by grower Andrew Ingram from The Tree Barn.
