A LANDMARK exhibition of illustrated manuscripts from the Bodleian Library has been packed up to send overseas.

Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond, an exhibition of more than 60 pieces dating back to the 13th century, is being sent to the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.

They will go on show there from March until July.

Conservator Sallyanne Gilchrist said: “It is common for the Bodleian to send items overseas as loans, but as far as I’m aware, this is only the second time we’ve loaned works to Australia.”

The colourful Persian, Mughal Indian and Ottoman Turkish manuscripts date from the 13th to the 18th century.

They come from one of the richest periods in the history of books and give an insight into the culture of Persia.

Ms Gilchrist said: “They are beautiful. They are fantastic miniatures and they are superbly painted.”
