A SMALL village in West Oxfordshire has won a £50,000 grant to help revamp its dilapidated community hall.

South Leigh, near Witney, hopes to raise £300,000 to extend the hall and improve its facilities.

The hall needs disabled toilets, rewiring to stop power cuts and new cooking facilities to meet the latest health and safety regulations.

Over the last 20 years, the 300-strong community has raised £30,000 for the projects and South Leigh Parish Council gave £3,500.

Now West Oxfordshire District Council has stepped in, pledging £50,000 at a cabinet meeting last Wednesday.

The parish council now hopes other organisations, including Oxfordshire County Council, will follow suit.

Parish council chairman Nicky Brooks said: “The community needs this. We are three miles out of Witney and there is one bus once a week. We could not be more delighted.”
