HE might be a Lonely Man in his Blue Suede Shoes, but Oxford’s last Elvis has decided its Now or Never to prove he’s not the only Hound Dog in this city.

Tony Warwick, 45, from Jericho, has run the Elvis Presley Jailhouse Rock Fan Club for the past two years.

He took over the job from his late mother Millie, who ran the club for more than four decades.

At its height a decade ago, the club had 70 members but Mr Warwick is now the only remaining Elvis supporter.

He hopes an event later this month will help create more interest in the club, as well as raising vital funds for two charities.

Mr Warwick, who is currently unemployed, said: “My mum was always a big Elvis fan, so I’ve been a lifelong fan myself.

“She died about a year ago and I took it over from her before she passed away. I’ve always enjoyed watching Elvis videos and listening to his songs.

“I think my favourite has to be Blue Suede Shoes. It’s just his music that I like really.”

Mr Warwick nursed his mother, 86, who became blind towards the end of her illness through kidney disease.

He said: “She could not do anything for herself because she was very weak due to her kidney troubles.”

The plan is now to relaunch the club in her memory at a special event to raise money for the Archway Foundation, an Oxford charity which helps people suffering with loneliness.

The organisation provides opportunities for people in the city to meet up with others during social events and offers ‘befrienders’ for those who can’t leave their house.

Half the money will also go to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, for which Mr Warwick is a volunteer.

He said: “On the night it’s going to be a big celebration of all things Elvis, so we’ll have his songs playing and there will be pictures and badges, things like that, for people to buy.

“And then we’re going to have an Elvis tribute. I’ll be playing the music and actually be performing as Elvis too.

“I’m a bit nervous because this is the first time I’ll have performed and it’s a bit of a secret because I haven’t told my family yet.”

He added: “I’m just trying to get a few more people into the club and more people interested. If we can raise £1,500 and then get more members, it’ll be fantastic.

“It’s what my mum would have wanted.”
