Growth at a Formula One and supercar exhaust manufacturer has prompted expansion to a larger factory in Thame.

Primary Designs has enjoyed increased demand from F1 and bosses say the decision to grow its range for Ferraris, Porsches and other supercars as well as developing entirely new sectors, will also lead to the creation of new manufacturing jobs.

Founder Pat Barrett, formerly an engineer with the Williams F1 team, said the £100,000 move also gave the firm scope to expand into component production for the aerospace, defence and marine sectors.

He added: “The design, materials and welding technologies we have can be applied to make durable, beautifully finished exhausts that sound great, release more power and are more efficient.”

Mr Barrett believes the new factory at the Thame Park Business Centre and the 15-strong workforce which has grown by 25 per cent in the past 12 months, will help offset seasonal demands associated with professional motorsport.

He said: “We had to invest in the highest standards of equipment for Formula One. The factory is designed to be flexible — anything from a one-off system to significantly higher volumes can be accommodated.”

In addition to the exhaust manufacturing, Primary Designs could offer other sub-contract services such as surface finishing processes and measuring technologies that enable companies from any industry to use F1 grade equipment on an ad-hoc basis. ib
