THE news that London Oxford Airport is to begin its daily, all-year-round flights to Jersey and the Isle of Man is a major step forward for the county’s economy.

If further regular links are made to international airports like Paris and Amsterdam, then the world is our oyster for business and pleasure travel. Given rising vehicle fuel costs and the inconvenience of getting to London, the scheme could be a major boost for Oxfordshire firms and residents.

Given its distance from the main industrial conurbations of London and the Midlands, Oxfordshire has long needed decent air links.

This might be the ideal opportunity to grow vital new services.

Yet we note with concern that Kidlington Parish Council, whose role is to speak on behalf of residents to the powers that be, did not know about the plans.

Flights have tailed off in recent years so the increase in flights will be noticed by residents.

With this intensification, the airport must work closely with councillors and residents on how their lives will be impacted.

And Cherwell District Council must, in its role as the local planning authority, move to regulate the increase in plane movements.

Our news today could be a blessing for our economy in difficult times. It would be a tragedy to see it marred by poor community relations.
