OXFORD is well-known as a tourist destination, with its dreaming spires, its historic colleges, its fascinating museums and its preposterous councillors.
Now (Loo revamp to cost £420,000, Monday’s Oxford Mail), councillor John Tanner unveils a new attraction, saying: “I would like people to come to Oxford to use our toilets.”
Naturally people will flock to Gloucester Green from every corner of the UK as well as from abroad to pay 40p or 50p to use the shining new lavatories there.
A large white elephant could be put on the roof to show tourists where this fantastic facility is.
It is a pity that the same councillor has already closed the most historic toilets in Oxford – in St Giles – as well as several other toilets which could have provided interesting tourist attractions.
As compensation, Mr Tanner could take visitors on a tour of Oxford’s streets, showing them the numerous wheelie bins cluttering the pavements – thanks to his rubbish schemes (and I mean that literally).
