We share Witney Town Council’s concern over the small number of people who have filled in a questionnaire about the future of the Corn Exchange. The Grade II-listed building in Market Square is the heart of Witney and has the potential to become a real hub for community activities.

We would love to see it transformed into a hall everyone in the town could use and take pride in — and so would the town council. But the council cannot achieve this without receiving information from local people about how they would like to see it changed. At council meetings there have been a myriad of ideas, including an updated cinema, theatre, cafe and dance hall.

The council has done what it can by distributing hard copies of the questionnaire and making it available on its website. It is also happy to receive written and emailed comments, whether on the official form or not. But only 24 people have so far responded to the consultation questionnaire, which will be used to decide on how the hall will be revamped and what facilities it will contain. The future of such an important building cannot be decided by just 0.1 per cent of Witney’s population. Now is the time to make your voice heard.
