Cyclists have been voicing concerns over the proposed redesign of Frideswide Square, Oxford. Their worries focus on the lack of cycle lanes in the two options on the table, both of which include three small roundabouts and a one-way system.

The county council’s view is that the central idea behind the £3.7m redesigned square is to create a ‘shared space’ where everyone uses the road equally, which in turn negates the need for cycle lanes.

Transport planners say they have spent a long time developing the system, which works well in other cities in the UK.

Consultation on the plans has finished and the county council’s cabinet will discuss all the concerns raised next month. We hope that those discussions lead to swift action The square, as it stands, is an ugly entry to the city and confusing for newcomers. As has been noted many times, traffic seems to flow much better when the numerous traffic lights dotted around it fail to work.

Like the councillor with responsibility for transport, Rodney Rose, what we want to see sooner rather than later are diggers moving on to the site.
