I HAVE been in Queen Street on many occasions when it’s been full of shoppers and, as the signs suggest, it’s a pedestrian street, the same as Cornmarket Street.

There are no signs saying ‘beware of buses or taxis’ as there are many going through day and night. This street must be a bus driver’s nightmare, even travelling at five mph or less, with jay-walkers not expecting buses to come up behind them.

How long can this go on before a serious accident will occur? It can only be a matter of time.

From Carfax to Bonn Square on both sides of Queen Street there is a row of black slabs in the road surface. If a thick yellow line was painted over these slabs from one end to the other, shoppers may get the message to keep behind them and give a clear path for oncoming buses and taxis. Maybe a sign to this effect would help.

For the cost of a tin of yellow paint it may, in time, prevent a fatality.

Or as a very last resort, when the town crier is on Carfax perhaps when he sounds his bell and shouts “oh ye, oh ye,” he could announce to pedestrians and shoppers “beware there is a bus coming up behind you”?

But to conclude on a serious note, safety is the main factor in this and it’s time something was done to change this before it’s too late for someone.
