The improvements made to the night scene in George Street, Oxford, are welcome. It is not so many years ago that it was branded “vomit alley” in a national report on public health by Lord Krebs.
Many older people were deterred from coming into that part of the city for fear of running into groups of youngsters clearly much the worse for wear from drink.
Police assure us that there have been significant improvements, which traders attribute partly to George Street becoming a prime location for restaurants.
Having said that, anyone who ventures into Oxford late at night knows there remains a minority capable of making the city an unpleasant place. There is still plenty of work to be done.
