Sir – I was interested to read your article (April 19) on the plan to extend the powers of the council wardens’ team. I agree with the city police commander that this is a good move. But could we go further?
I would like the city council and the county council to look at the city wardens taking over responsibility for enforcing controlled parking regulations outside the city centre. This would mean more wardens visiting more streets across the city.
While I would not wish to divert the existing wardens from patrolling the areas of greatest need, other parts of the city have problems with litter, dog fouling and cycling on pavements The wardens’ powers to issue spot fines could be usefully employed.
Having one team should also be more efficient. Whether that efficiency is turned into cost saving or greater coverage, or a combination of the two, should be open to debate.
