Sir – I am grateful to Christopher Gray’s review of the RSC’s King John (April 26) for warning me off.
I had bought a ticket but shall not use it. I have waited too long for my first chance to see this play to have my evening ruined, yet again, by a director who thinks she knows better than Shakespeare.
King John is little known and rarely staged; it deserves to be presented with integrity, not demeaned by cheap gimmicks and by casting decisions which make nonsense of the text.
