Mums and youngsters at a Wantage primary school have done their bit to help soldiers in Afghanistan.

Soldiers from 4 Logistic Support Regiment, Dalton Barracks, Abingdon, held an Olympic-themed fundraiser at their base in Helmand province as they will still be in Afghanistan during the Games this summer.

Some 30 soldiers covered 20km a day on rowing, cycling and cross trainer machines, from May 1 to 17.

And two of their wives helped organise a raffle at Stockham Primary School to help them reach their £8,000 target.

Karen Taylforth, of Witan Road, Wantage, and Lea Hastie, of Plumbe Court, Wantage, collected more than £500 from the raffle on Friday with prizes donated by local businesses.

Mrs Taylforth, 28, whose husband Corporal Alan Taylforth, 30, took part in the fitness challenge, said: “I am really proud of him.

“With all the other work they have to do in the heat, they can still find the time to do 20km a day.”

The soldiers are in the Combat Service Support Kandak Advisory Training Team which advises the Afghan National Army.

They completed the challenge at Camp Tombstone were they are based.

So far £4,200 has been raised for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Cancer Research UK, the Army Benevolent Fund and Scope.
