CAMPAIGNER Peter Tatchell is set to attend the Oxford Pride festival next week to call for better rights for gay people.

Mr Tatchell, who in 2007 was the Greens’ prospective parliamentary candidate for Oxford East, said gays, lesbians, and bisexuals make a huge contribution to the city.

A patron of Oxford Pride, Mr Tatchell said: “The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community makes a huge, positive contribution to Oxford. It adds to the cultural diversity of the city.

“Celebrate your sexuality and the LGBT rights we have won. But remember the battle for equality is not yet over.

“Despite government promises to reform the law, there is still a ban on same-sex marriage. Civil partnerships are not equality. They are a form of sexual apartheid, with different laws for gay and straight people. I am against the ban on same-sex couples getting married and I am equally opposed to the way heterosexual couples are barred from having a civil partnership. In a democratic society, there should be equality for everyone.”

Oxford Pride celebrates its 10th anniversary this month with a Wizard of Oz theme.

It runs from June 8-17, with its main event on June 16.

Pride spokeswoman Cheryl Briggs said: “Peter only takes part in four UK Prides a year so this is quite an honour.

“The parade will leave Ship Street at noon and arrive at Oxpens Field where there will be live acts, stalls and a fun-filled, family event that will continue until 8pm.

“Peter will be speaking on the main stage at about 2pm.”

Oxford Pride was founded following the success of a Paradise Street party organised by the Jolly Farmers pub and the Castle Tavern in May 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
