SIX-year-old Orla McMahon said she had “the best day of my life” as the flag she designed was hoisted to the top of Oxford Castle’s St George’s Tower.

The Cholsey Primary School pupil won a competition to design the flag with an eye-catching creation based on the history of the castle inspired by a school trip.

She said: “I saw the flag being raised from St George’s Tower. I helped to pull it, I had to pull it up really hard.

“I drew the picture of Queen Matilda looking out of the flag and she sees Stephen outside of the castle.

“I drew Queen Matilda because we were learning about her at school.

“Stephen is trying to destroy the castle and take the place of Queen Matilda and be king.”

The competition, run by Oxford Castle Unlocked, challenged Oxfordshire schoolchildren to come up with an inventive design for the new flag.
