A SUMMERTIME crackdown on drink-drivers has seen 21 people arrested on suspicion of the offence in Oxfordshire.

Roads policing officers have so far arrested 92 people – with an average age of 34 – in the Thames Valley region.

In total, 53 have been charged, with 22 bailed and 17 released with no further action.

This year’s arrests show a 45 per cent decrease on the 168 made during the same period in 2011.

The campaign, which ends next Saturday, will see police targeting individuals on the way home from nights out and the morning after.

Supt Chris Brown, head of roads policing, said: “If you choose to drink and drive – and it is a choice - you face a driving ban, up to £5,000 in fines and a criminal record.

“There is no excuse for it and our message is simple; don’t do it.”

Police say that at twice the legal limit, you are at least 50 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision than a driver who has not consumed any alcohol.
