OXFORDSHIRE locations and sporting events will be celebrated in memorabilia for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Accountant David Buxton has created two of only four official postcards that will be made for the summer sporting spectacular.

The limited edition mementos celebrate Oxford and Bicester and are due to go on sale next month.

The Oxford card commemorates the centenary of Arnold Jackson’s Stockholm Olympic gold medal victory, the Iffley Road Track where Roger Banister broke the four-minute mile record in 1954 and Brasenose College, where Jackson was a former student.

The Bicester postcard features a series of images relating to the town, including a picture of the 1948 Olympic Torch being brought to England from Calais on HMS Bicester and two runners who marked the start of the torch relay in Greece.

Only 300 will be produced of each, so Olympics collectors will be keen to snap them up.

The postcards will be sold by the Society of Olympic Collectors at the British Library in London from July 24, throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.

Mr Buxton is treasurer of the society, an organisation which has members across the globe, and is also president of Bicester and District Twinning Society.

He said: “I chose Bicester as it is where I live and I wanted to promote that the 1948 Torch arrived in England on HMS Bicester.

“I chose Oxford, because I have lived half my life in Oxford, worked at Brasenose College and admired the career of Arnold Jackson and I wanted to commemorate both with the postcard.

“When I realised that Arnold Jackson won the 1,500 metres on July 10 and the torch was leaving Oxford on July 10, it just needed to be done.

“I used to run at Iffley Road for the Oxford City Athletic Club, so the coincidences could not be ignored.”

Mr Buxton was also a special guest at last month’s Olympic Torch lighting and handover ceremonies in Greece, where he sat a few rows behind Princess Anne, David Beckham and London’s mayor Boris Johnson.

He said: “It was very humbling to be there. The lighting ceremony was a fantastic event, held in the ruins of Olympia, where the early Olympics were held from about 800BC to 140AD.

“I felt that I had attended a ceremony with people from all over the world that had a common interest.”

Postcards will be available from July 1.

Anyone interested can call Mr Buxton on 01869 244031, or write to him at 88 Bucknell Road, Bicester, Oxon, OX26 2DR He will also be selling them in Sheep Street on July 9 when the Olympic Torch is brought through the town.

It is not the first time Mr Buxton has designed postcards for historic events.

Others include the 10th anniversary of the Bicester Twinning Charter with its German twin Neunkirchen-Seelscheid and the 2004 Torch Relay at Much Wenlock, where the idea of the Modern Olympics was born.
