Sir – In your article of June 14 on the opportunity to tour the county’s recycling and landfill sites, the spokesman for the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership refers to the fact that we have been recycling paper for a long time now.

Would he like to comment on the fact that current research indicates that grades of paper such as newsprint break down to only a very limited extent under the anaerobic conditions found in landfill and that recycling newsprint, rather than sourcing it from sustainably managed plantations, is counter-productive in terms of greenhouse gas emissions?

If you do the maths, landfill is good, recycling is bad so far as newsprint is concerned.
