There have been plenty of raised eyebrows already at the mix of people chosen to bear the Olympic Torch through Oxfordshire.
But it is a real pity, indeed a missed opportunity, that Ken Lester, Britain’s youngest Olympian, was not selected to carry the torch through his home town of Wallingford.
Mr Lester, 65, was just 13 years and 144 days old when he competed in the Rome Games of 1960 as a cox in the coxed pairs.
Despite repeated efforts from civic leaders, Mr Lester has been told he will miss out on taking part in Wallingford’s Olympic Torch ceremony. In any event, the torch will travel through Wallingford, Crowmarsh and Nettlebed on the morning of Tuesday, July 10, and we urge everyone who is able to support the runners as the torch makes its way through the county. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.
