WHATEVER happened to Royal Mail? I worked there 35 years and it was a pleasure to be there.

We on delivery started between 5am and 6am, we would then prepare our delivery and leave the sorting office between 7am and 7.30am.

The mail was sorted to your delivery, which you then prepared and left either in your own van or with the drop-off van round the area.

You were due back in the sorting office about 9am, then it was break-time for 30 minutes and the sorting for the second delivery, leaving about 10.30am.

When the second delivery was completed, it was time for home, unless you were on overtime.

I cannot understand there is no second delivery, so what happens? I receive my mail between noon and 1pm.

The inspectors came up through the ranks and knew all about what happened. So what happens now?

The wage when I started was £6 per week, plus overtime, which there was a lot of.

The wages now I believe are a lot better, which the union had a lot to do with.

I was a union officer for 32 years, along with a lot of friends.

In the days I started we also handled parcels and we also had mail trains, most of which they have done away with now.

I just wonder what’s gone wrong, they make a good profit, so can anyone tell me what’s gone wrong with it all?
