A 22-YEAR-OLD could face jail over driving offences that saw a police officer pulled along an Oxford city centre road.

Faisal Shaukat, of Normandy Crescent, Oxford, admitted drink- driving and driving without insurance at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The incident, on February 12, saw a police officer dragged along Hythe Bridge Street as Shaukat drove his father’s Mercedes 4x4.

Jonathan Coode, defending, said: “It was his father’s car that he had borrowed. He does not mind me saying that effectively he was showing off.

“By driving it at all, he wanted people to see him in a smart 4x4 Mercedes car.”

He added: “He pulled away from the curb and kept going. He should have stopped when the officer tried to pull the key out but did not.”

Shaukat was found to have 50 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Judge Christopher Compston said: “I take a very dim view of this. It seems to me prison is very, very much on the cards.

“This was a disgraceful bit of driving and I look at your previous convictions and you have done this sort of thing before.”

No details were given in court of any injuries the officer received. Shaukat will be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on September 24.
