THERE are mixed forecasts over the likelihood of today's thunderstorms hitting parts of the county today.

This morning's wet start will continue throughout the day with heavy rain at times, with the Met Office's amber warning for torrential downpours still in place.

There are some forecasts Oxford will see thunderstorms today, however the Met Office currently indicates the city may escape.

However, its forecasters are predicting Bicester late morning and Witney and Abingdon this afternoon will not be so lucky.

It comes after the spectacular storm that hit the county in the early hours of Friday.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: "The very warm and humid airmass across the UK will become increasingly unstable through Saturday. This will lead to the development of areas of intense thunderstorms, these moving northwards across the UK and affecting different areas at various times through the day.

"In this situation, large amounts of energy are available in the atmosphere and this, coupled with high moisture content, can lead to torrential downpours along with frequent lightning activity, large hail and locally strong gusts.

"As is usually the case with thunderstorms, broad areas can be identified as at risk some time in advance but detail will remain very uncertain until very close to the event.

"Some areas will miss the worst of the storms whilst nearby spots experience severe downpours with some localised flooding, so the public are advised stay in touch with the latest forecasts and warnings through Saturday."

Strange how the Met Office didn't issue a warning for the early Friday morning storm, although I suppose they couldn't have predicted I was going to wash my car on Thursday afternoon.
The Met Office warnings changed half a dozen times yesterday, maybe they're holding a sweepstake in the office :-)

As someone said in the bus shelter (another City Council joke) whilst it was pelting down outside "no wonder the Romans went back home" to which another passenger shouted "bet the bus was late then, too!"
