Every time we wonder whether the situation at Castle Mill can become any worse, somehow it does.
Those who have followed the turns in this story, will recall that possible contamination of the site where the university has chosen to build accommodation blocks on the edge of Port Meadow has become a major issue.
Now diesel appears to have been found that is posing a potential health threat to irrigation wells on the nearby allotments. This emerged during contamination tests on the site earlier this month. When the university asked contractors what could have caused it, back came the reply there had in fact been a diesel spill back at the beginning of April, which someone had decided was not worth raising at the time.
A warning has now gone out to allotment holders three months after this leak. When it comes to this project nothing is ever clear or simple. Meanwhile, a little more trust and goodwill towards the university may have ebbed away.
