Sir – Last Friday, May 22, at 9pm I unexpectedly watched on BBC 2 the third episode of four directed by Steve Humphries for the BBC, a programme series called Britain’s Greatest Generation. It was a fascinating documentary series dedicated to the nation for the 70th anniversary of VE Day on May 8.

Readers and others, who may not have seen it, might wish to see and hear it for themselves on their own computer by calling for a recording on BBC iPlayer.

This particular third episode, lasting for an hour, was of great personal interest to me because, within it there were excellent stories recalled by members of my generation in which men and women who served in the RAF during the Second World War, as well as others who served in army, Royal Navy and elsewhere, recalled their experiences. The need for a campaign medal award for Bomber Command was clearly expressed in recognition of their efforts and outstanding losses of aircraft and lives sacrificed.

Naturally, after more than 10 years of appealing for Britain to make such an award, I am delighted to see such a documentary. Your readers will know how many letters you have published on my behalf over the years to encourage the granting of such an award. The last letter being one on page 32 in The Oxford Times dated April 30 this year.

In addition to seeking the award of a Bomber Command campaign medal I have also mentioned to your readers before how disappointed are those eligible BC veterans in UK that they have not yet been presented with the French Legion d’Honneur award for which these made application last year. The French Government has yet to comment further on this unfortunate delay.
