Sir – Thanks to your feature in the Weekend section about the exhibition of photography by a Palestinian photojournalist, I was encouraged to attend the exhibition in the Friends Meeting Hose and also an informative meeting at which experts discussed the problems of reporting events in Palestine.

If M R Harper (Letters, June 18) was irritated by reading about this aspect of the Middle East problem, then he or she doesn’t realise that, with its world-class university, the city of Oxford is one of the intellectual and cultural centres in the UK, and that many of its residents wish to take an informed interest in issues that lie beyond the remit of the city and county councils.

And, yes, some of these issues will be political.

To please the mythical ‘average reader’, which M R Harper claims to be, The Oxford Times should never have reported the creation and work of Oxfam.
