Sir – Christopher Gray’s comment concerning Othello at the RSC (Weekend, August 20) “The casting of the British-Zimbabwean actor Lucian Msamati has caused excitement... I frankly see no issue here” – I think he misses the point. The casting of a black Iago creates a new, fascinating perspective on the relationship between himself and Othello.
Shakespeare explores racism in the play and this production has created more layers.
The fact that Lucian Msamati is brilliant as a complex Iago bringing a hushed silence from the audience every time he speaks just adds to a quite exhilarating production.
