Sir – Your treatment of the extraordinary correspondence between David Cameron and Ian Hudspeth is surprisingly low-key: a story on page 14 and a gentle admonishment – ‘unfortunate error’ – in the second leader.

What these letters reveal is that the Prime Minister does not grasp either the nature of local authority financing (excusable) or the impact of cuts to services for the young or the vulnerable.

Does the leader of the county council now regret his pleasure at the Conservative election victory, given the devastation which it has brought to the services for the people of this county and his failure to explain this consequence to the MP for Witney?
