Sir – If students are to be taken out of private housing (Student cap could be cut to ease city housing crisis, The Oxford Times, August 17) more accommodation will be required for them. After the disgraceful fiasco of demolishing four perfectly good houses at the top of Latimer Road and putting up a hideous block of student rooms it seems as if more of these blocks will be required.
Headington is a residential area and not, as one councillor said, ‘Brookes dormitory’ or words to that effect. We were promised that four private houses would be put up to compensate for the demolition of the four decent properties – has anyone seen the replacements? Laughably small, indeed.
Why was the Wheatley site decommissioned? Enough is enough. The residents of Headington will no longer tolerate houses being demolished to accommodate growing numbers of students; the whole character of Headington is being altered. It is already too busy an area with traffic jams a daily occurrence – emergency vehicles have great difficulty negotiating the traffic –and it will remain so until a road is built directly from the John Radcliffe site to the ring road. We do not want any more student accommodation here, thank you; please find somewhere else to build.
Pat Whitehouse Bickerton Road, Headington
