MILLIONS of pounds to make the area around the new Westgate Centre look its best are set to be approved tonight.

Oxford City councillors will be asked to approve a plan to ask the developer for £1.1m contribution for other civic projects across the city.

The city executive board will approve or reject the plan to ask for £567,000 in both 2016 and 2017.

The money will fund council projects across the city, from a new community centre for Headington Quarry to school expansions.

One project highlighted in the Westgate area includes improvements to Bonn Square, Castle Street and Norfolk Street pavements In total, the Westgate Alliance will be asked for £4.3m over the course of the project in Community Infrastucture Levy (CIL). The £1.1m is the first installment of this.

Head of city development Michael Crofton Briggs told councillors in a report: “The city council is the ground landlord for the development site and through the development agreement with the Westgate Alliance [the city council] will benefit financially from the success of the scheme.”

The executive board will meet at Town Hall, St Aldate’s, today from 5pm.
